Strategic Planning & Realisation

Overview

Strategic Planning & Realisation is about building a road to somewhere that does not yet exist and looking around the bends in it long before you get to them.

The plan typically aims for a single, holistic end, perhaps consisting of a variety of elements. It identifies each component step towards the final goal and evaluates the costs and benefits of each step compared with possible alternative options. It is rich in detail so that the required resources may be allocated and appropriate accountabilities established for implementation.

Most essentially the strategic plan demonstrates that the overall goal can be attained and states how, and for how much. It then falls to the wisdom of the owners of the plan to decide whether the benefits of attaining the goal will provide sufficient reward for the costs and risks involved in attaining it.

While strategic business planning is indeed knowledge based, it is not a science. Effective strategic planning – military and business – demands creativity, instinct, daring and flair. A tactical objective might appear to require major cost and risk, when it really needs a creative or pragmatic solution. It is this sort of experiential solution-finding that makes the difference when engaging SMS in a strategic planning or realisation capacity.

Just as importantly, strategic planning and realisation is a dynamic, two-way process. It must adapt to implementation constraints and competitor movements, whilst remaining focussed on the end-goal.

SMS’s Strategic Planning & Realisation service offers a superior solution because its members have both detailed knowledge and hands-on experience of your industry and competitive environment.
